You’re most likely here because either you, or someone you care about has been diagnosed with breast cancer. We understand how confusing all the information can be so we have tried to make it as simple as we can to help you ask the right questions to your clinical care team.

As you probably know, breast cancer is not one disease, it is broken down into several types – each of which will respond differently to treatment.

When breast cancer tissue is examined by pathologists, it is subtyped to help determine what sort of cells it contains and therefore what type of treatment it is more likely to respond to. Currently this process is usually done manually and pathologists do a good job, however the procedure has been little-changed in almost 50 years. There have obviously been huge leaps in medical technology in the intervening period and now it’s time to bring breast cancer diagnostics into the 21st Century.

MammaTyper® is a real-time, quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR) test. You may well have heard a lot about this technology over the past couple of years as it has been used to diagnose Covid 19. In the case of breast cancer, rapid PCR testing can quickly and accurately subtype tissue whilst removing the margin for human error. It provides doctors with a solid foundation to discuss with their patients the best and likely most effective treatment options for their particular case.

Having an accurate diagnosis is so important. Without this foundation on which to base treatment plans, it is impossible to know what will work. RT-qPCR tests are relatively new and should complement the excellent work that the clinical teams are doing, but it’s worth asking the question – how was my case subtyped?
